Looking for a Notion guide for beginners (and party animals)? I got you. This isn’t your typical guide to Notion, it’s written by someone who loves the chaos of creativity and structure.

I totally get it, I used to think Notion is hard to learn. But once you get past the rookie stage, you’ll honestly become obsessed with it. Every beginning is tough, but remember: anyone can learn anything if they just keep trying.

That’s exactly why I created this guide. I wanted to share my own perspective on how to use Notion effectively and make it work for you.

(This is a blog post from a girl, who’s falling in love with Notion.)

I’m a party animal (DJ), a fire dancer, a freelancer, and a wife. I love managing all these different passions within a system that works for me. Being organized, working with plans, and creating time structures—that’s my thing. Without that balance, I wouldn’t be able to handle my responsibilities while having so much fun.

This is exactly where Notion comes in; it gives me a “big picture” view to track all my tasks. I’ve tried countless tools and time management techniques over the years, and Notion is the only one I’ve never grown tired of using.

Highlights

  • How to overcome the initial learning curve and turn Notion into a creative obsession.

Is Notion a waste of time?

At first glance, Notion can seem like a lot. You may feel lost among its various features. On Reddit, you’ll see people talking about how it’s “trying to do too much” or how they spent hours setting it up, only to give up later.

Notion’s biggest “problem” is also its biggest strength: flexibility. It’s not a one-size-fits-all app that forces you into a system you don’t like. Instead, it’s like a blank notebook that you can “draw” what you want. The possibilities are endless, and that can feel overwhelming at first, but you’ll get over it. Just learning all the features will take time, like many things in our lives.

To avoid feeling demotivated, start small. Don’t try to build some elaborate dashboard from scratch on day one. Later, you’ll be able to create your pages, even your templates. If I were able to create a portfolio like this, you can do it too. Once you see how it works, you can tweak things little by little until it fits your style perfectly.

  • User-friendly interface: Its clean, minimal designs are favorable for both beginners and pros.
  • Quick search: Need to find something from hundreds of pages? The quick search makes it easy to locate info.
  • Customizable & template-friendly: Tons of templates and options to create your perfect setup, no matter your workflow.
  • Visual appeal: The interface is sleek and stylish, with lots of ways to make it your own.
  • Works everywhere: Use it on your phone, laptop, or tablet, and everything stays synced in real time.
  • Integration capabilities: Connect it to tools like Google Calendar, Slack, or Zapier for even more power.

How can I simplify my 2026 Notion setup?

In the beginning, discovering possibility is exciting but don’t try creating everything all at once. Instead, focus on a single use case, like building a task tracker page or organizing your weekly schedule.

Notion offers tons of pre-designed templates. Pick one that matches your goals, and skip the hassle of building from scratch.

Worth mentioning, too many pages can feel chaotic. Clean up your workspace by hiding stuff you don’t need everyday. Keeping it minimal makes everything easier to manage.

Examples of my Notion pages:

I constantly tweak and improve my pages. If a method doesn’t work as well as I expected, I simply adapt or remove it. Honestly, I’m still a student of the process, learning something new every single day as I use it.

Below, this is my freelance business page. It’s a central dashboard where I can see everything at a glance. While scrolling, I’ve organized sections for things like client overviews, meeting calendars, quick actions, and more.

Else? I have a To-Do Manager where I track my daily tasks and cross them off as I go. It’s simple but super satisfying. Notion Calendar shows me everything I’ve assigned a date to.

I can also tag each task as “Important” or “Urgent.” This way, the Eisenhower Matrix (esenberk tablosu)* below clearly highlights which tasks are my top priority. I use this section mostly when I’m working on my monthly plans.

Notion isn’t just for work. For example, I’m getting benefit from menstrual cycle sycing while I have creating weekly and monthly plans. But learning everything isn’t easy in the beginning. So I created a Notion page to take personalized notes.

Even tough, I have a professional website, I keep my writing portfolio on Notion.

I have a personal website on WordPress, but my portfolio is on Notion. Follow me on LinkedIn to catch my next articles. Soon: I’ll explain how to build a portfolio on Notion for free.

Ladies and gentlemen… Here is my Life Dashboard. Hehe. It’s still a work in progress based on my aesthetics. Well… I have everything on this page to organize and track my life. For example, by journaling based on my menstrual phases, I’ll collect personal data so I can analyze how each phase impacts my body. With this single page, my Notion sidebar stays clear. I only keep the pages I use every day there. Also, I can create automations between this page and my freelancing page. That is, everything can be separate but also interconnected.

So, is Notion a waste of time? Nope. Take it slow and make it work for you. Start small and let Notion adapt to your needs.

Use Notion Calendar for your productivity growth

I used to rely on Google Calendar for all my schedulings, but things got “eh” when I started creating multiple calendar for different Notion pages. Because keeping track of them all was time-consuming. I wanted to track everything on one place. So Notion Calendar (which is seperate weblink, not a custom page) solved that problem.

At first, I couldn’t find an easy solution to transfer calendars from Notion to Google. But syncing my Google Calendar with Notion was easier. Now, I can track both my Google Calendar events and my Notion-specific schedules all in one place (via Notion Calendar, sure).

How to put a task on your Notion calendar: After creating a calendar on your any Notion page, just click “Open in Calendar.”

With this way, you can view all your calendar database in one spot, desktop or mobile app. You can also add your Google Calendars to this space.

Can I add a Notion calendar view to Google Calendar? It doesn’t exist, but there are 3rd party apps for this. Notion Calendar is easier for now.

Does Notion Calendar work on Notion app? Download Notion Calendar app (different from Notion App), to follow your tasks and events on your app.

How to add events Notion Calendar
On Desktop/web:

  • Double-click for a time slot in your calendar
  • Add event details like name, participants, or locations
  • Click “Send invite” to notify others

On mobile:

  • Tap the “+” at the bottom right to create an event
  • You can only edit events created on mobile if you’re the organizer. For detailed updates, use desktop or web.

Can I use Notion offline?

Yes, but with some limitations. You can access pages you’ve recently opened while offline, but real-time syncing and editing won’t work until you’re back online. It’s handy for reading notes or checking a task list.

Is it worth getting Notion’s paid version?

Their free features are already helpful. They give you so much at no cost, but if the free version is this good, imagine what the paid version has to offer. I’m really thankful. And they’ve earned every penny of the subscription fee.

With the paid version, your productivity gets a serious boost. You can create professional websites, set up automations, design charts, and so much more.

In 2026, Notion’s Plus plan costs $10/month, perfect for small teams. If you need the full power of Notion AI, the Business plan is $20/month and comes with everything you need to streamline your workflow

What are common mistakes people make when starting with Notion

Most people don’t know where to begin. That’s why a good Notion help guide can save you hours of frustration, like this one you’re reading.

Keyboard shortcuts save hours

Still doesn’t use shortcuts in your digital life? Oh, dear! Notion’s keyboard shortcuts and slash commands can increase your efficiency. You can do everything you need without ever touching your mouse. Save this Notion page until you learn.

Overcomplicating page structures

Many beginners create too many top-level pages, which makes the sidebar a total mess. Instead, try grouping related pages under one main page. It keeps things neat and way easier to navigate.

Avoiding databases

Databases might look intimidating, but they’re Notion’s superpower. They’re not as scary as they seem, and once you learn the basics, they’ll make organizing information way more productive.

Ignoring templates

When you’re just starting, pre-ready templates are a lifesaver. Don’t stress about creating everything from scratch, use templates to get started. You can tweak them later as you figure out what works for you.

Skipping aesthetic consistency

New users often try to make their pages visually appealing without establishing a consistent aesthetic. Sticking to a limited color palette and using minimal images can help maintain a clean look across the workspace.

Create a page for blocks

You’ll see “Private, Workspace, and Favorites” sections on the left side. To create private pages, click on + sign. Then, gather frequently used pages under Favorites. And, a Workspace is a shared page.

Build with blocks

Notion blocks: notion guide
You can create subpages in your main page. For shortcut: /page

In Notion, everything is organized into blocks. Each piece of content, whether text, image, table, or embed, exists as a separate block. This block-based structure offers flexibility and customization. After creating a page, you can play with blocks.

Here are some of the main types of blocks:

  1. Text Blocks: Standard paragraphs for writing and explanations.
  2. Headings (H1, H2, H3): Helps structure content for readability.
  3. Lists (Bulleted & Numbered Lists): Organize information clearly.
  4. Pages: Nest pages within pages to keep everything structured.
  5. Databases: Tables, lists, and galleries to manage structured data.
  6. To-Do Lists: Checkboxes for task management.
  7. Embeds: Integrate YouTube videos, Tweets, and other media.

Organize your page with database

Notion database
Shortcut: /database => then pick desired view.

Notion’s databases take organization to the next level. Think of them as spreadsheets, but they are more user-friendly. Unlike traditional spreadsheets, every row (or item) in a database is a fully editable page that can contain subpages, text, media, and more.

Each page in a database comes with customizable properties, allowing you to tag, categorize, and filter data for better organization. This means you can view and manage your information in a way that makes sense to you.

Moreover, Notion offers multiple database views, so you can visualize your data in different formats. You can customize views further by adding filters, sorting rules, and grouped categories, ensuring you always see exactly what you need.

Use Notion templates

Start with templates. Notion offers a variety of pre-made templates (paid or free) for different needs—task management, note-taking, project planning, and more. The best part? You can duplicate any template into your workspace and customize it to fit your style. This way, you don’t have to figure everything out at once. You get a functional setup instantly and can tweak it as you go.

One more last thing. Using Notion to manage your workday is great, but productivity isn’t just about organizing tasks—it’s also about maintaining your energy levels and avoiding burnout. Small adjustments to your daily routine can make a huge difference in how you feel at your desk. If you spend long hours working, these healthy little secrets for your desk job will help you stay focused, energized, and pain-free.

Spend a little time exploring the features, and trust me, it all gets easier. I’ve been there too. Once I got the hang of it, Notion became a crucial for both my personal and work life. Now I can organize my research, notes, and workflows without the chaos. Plus, with shortcuts, setting up pages is so much faster. When I say I love Notion, I mean it.

There are tons of Notion guides, but most are still complicated. That’s why, I created this one to match the way to think.
