You produce content consistently, focus on your keywords, yet suddenly, your rankings start to slide, or even not ranking! Oops, that can be your signal from Google that your content, while technically optimized, isn’t truly helpful to the person reading it.

The Helpful Content System (HCS) was introduced as one of Google’s ranking systems to promote people-first content. And Google’s core ranking systems look for content that solves real problems and demonstrates Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). If your content is losing visibility, one likely cause is that Google is detecting site-wide quality issues across your website (although other factors can also play a role.)

But wait, you don’t need complicated solutions to fix this. Let me explain.

Most important clues you need for diagnosing and recovering from ranking drops are waiting inside your Google Search Console (GSC). This guide will show you how to read those clues and apply a clear, five-step strategy to raise your site’s quality signal.

Diagnosing the low signal through GSC data

Using Google Search Console (GSC), we review pages with performance drops or low engagement to identify where our content may be failing to meet the helpful-and-people-first criteria. From those analyses, we derive actionable signals about which pages likely frustrate users and need improvement.

Diagnosis 1: Review overall performance and find suspect pages

This step assesses how recent Google updates have impacted your site and identifies low-performing content.

  1. Click on Performance
  2. Set the date range to the last 6 months. Ensure this period covers any major core updates that could have impacted your site.
  3. Check the boxes for Total Clicks, Total Impressions, and Average Position. Review the data daily. Significant drops in clicks and position indicate that Google’s systems see weaker quality signals for your website.
A short general analysis example:

This graph illustrates this website’s GSC performance from June 2024 to October 2025. A critical note for our analysis: This property launched after July 2024. Therefore, these metrics weren’t affected by the major 2023 Helpful Content updates.

  • Average Position (30.8): This shows that, for roughly the last year, our average rankings have been around position 30, well beyond the first page. This doesn’t indicate a penalty; instead, it shows that Google’s systems see the website’s overall relevance and quality signals, including E-E-A-T, as too weak to rank higher.
  • Daily Volatility: The constant movement in our average position suggests that Google is frequently re-evaluating where our pages should rank, and sudden pullbacks after brief improvements can be a sign that users aren’t fully satisfied with what they find on the page.
  1. Let’s continue where we left off. Click on the Pages tab. Sort all pages by Average Position (from worst to best). If many pages are stuck below position 20, it can indicate a site-wide low quality signal.

If you find many weak pages in this step, jump to Recovery Step 2 (content pruning) and Step 3 (fixing low-engagement pages).

Diagnosis 2: Confirming low-engagement signals

This is one of the strongest point that the quality of the content itself is low.

  1. While in the Pages tab, click on a suspicious page that has an Average Position between 1 and 10 but shows a low total click count.
  2. While viewing the performance of a specific page, click the Queries tab to see which search terms lead users to that page. Make sure Average Position is selected. (Note: When you click on a page, Search Console automatically limits the data to that page. There’s no need to remove this filter unless you want to view data for all pages.)
  3. In the Queries tab, look for a search term where your average position is between 1 and 5. To do this, make sure the CTR (Click-through Rate) column is visible; you may need to enable it on the graph.
    • If the CTR for a high-ranking query is below 5% (a High Position + Low CTR pattern, often low compared to typical benchmarks), it may indicate that your title and snippet are not compelling or not well aligned with searcher expectations, so most users never even reach the content.

If you find pages with high position but low CTR, go to Recovery Step 3 to rebuild these pages around the user’s full intent.

Diagnosis 3: Identifying off-topic content

This step helps detect whether your site is attracting search traffic from topics unrelated to your core niche. This can be a sign that your topical focus is diluted, which may make it harder for Google’s systems to see your site as a strong authority on its core niche.

  1. In the Performance report, go to the Queries tab and sort all queries by Impressions.
  2. Click the filter bar, select Query, and enter a keyword that belongs to your main niche. This will exclude queries containing this term and can help reveal search terms that may fall outside your primary topic.
  3. Click Apply. This may surface queries that point to a potential off-topic area.
  4. If you see high impressions or unexpected clicks for clearly off-topic queries, it could be a sign that your content is sending mixed signals about your site’s main focus.
  5. Repeat: Clear the filter and repeat with another irrelevant term.

Warning about filter use:

Filtering out a single keyword (e.g., “fact-checking”) will only remove queries that contain that exact term, but it won’t catch related queries that are phrased differently (e.g., “SEO audit” or “misinformation checker”).

As a result, this method gives you an incomplete picture, and many potentially relevant or irrelevant queries may still appear depending on how users phrase their searches.

To get a broader and more accurate view, manually scan your top queries and group them by theme. Look for clusters that clearly fall outside your intended niche, especially if they generate unexpected impressions or clicks. But you can also apply a safer method.

  1. Go to the Queries tab within the Performance report. Sort all queries by Impressions (descending).
  2. Systematically read the top 100 queries (or more).
  3. Look for groups of terms (clusters) that clearly indicate a topic entirely outside the scope of your core niche.

Once an off-topic cluster is identified, use the GSC interface to find the specific page generating this traffic. If the topic is not important, prune it (delete or consolidate) according to Step 2 of the Recovery Plan. If the topic is worth keeping, rebuild the page using the guidelines in Step 1.

Diagnosis 4: Site-wide low quality check (Indexing)

This step helps you detect a common mistake of producing content for volume rather than value.

  1. Click on Indexing => Pages from the left-hand menu.
  2. A high number of “Not indexed” pages may indicate that Google considers some of your content low-priority, low-value, or technically hard to index. This can dilute the perceived overall quality of your site and make it harder for your content to be treated as truly helpful.
  3. Scroll down to the table showing the reasons for non-indexing. Click on the following two categories:
    • Crawled – currently not indexed
    • Discovered – currently not indexed
  4. Click the Export button to download the full list under these two categories. These pages were either crawled or discovered by Google, but have not been included in the index.
    • While some may be held back due to technical reasons (e.g., crawl budget, duplicate content, server issues), others may be excluded due to thin, redundant, or low-value content.
    • Use this list as a starting point for your content pruning plan. Prioritize reviewing and improving pages that seem incomplete, outdated, or off-topic.

Use this exported list as input for Recovery Step 2 (decide what to delete, consolidate, or update with Step 1 and Step 3).

Fix low helpful content signals: The 5-step strategic content recovery plan

We have our low-signal content notes. Then we need to fix these. But, how? Below, I suggest a recovery plan to make them genuinely people-first in Google’s eyes.

Step 1: Prove your first-hand experience (E-E-A-T)

The biggest recent change in E-E-A-T is the E for “Experience”, added in 2022. Stop writing what others write; write what you know and have done.

  • Show, don’t tell: If you’re reviewing a product, include original photos, personal screenshots, or unique data only you could have gathered (e.g., “After 90 days of use, here are my time-stamped results”).
  • Validate the author: Ensure every article has a clear byline that links to an author page detailing their real-world credentials and professional experience related to the topic. For instance, a medical article should ideally be written or at least reviewed by a qualified medical professional.
  • Tip: Google’s official product review guidelines reinforce this. They explicitly say:
    “Demonstrate that you are knowledgeable about what you are reviewing—show you are an expert.” So don’t just describe, prove it. Include real usage evidence: visuals, test results, timelines, or even your mistakes. Source: Google – Write high-quality product reviews

Step 2: Implement a ruthless content pruning strategy

Various low-quality pages can hurt your domain. That means you should selectively remove or upgrade that dead weight.

  • Audit and decide: For the low-signal content identified in your GSC audit, choose one of two actions:
    • Delete (410 Status Code): If the content gets no traffic and has no potential for improvement, delete it entirely. A 410 response tells Google the content is gone for good and can help clarify that the URL should be removed from the index.
    • Consolidate (301 Redirect): If you have multiple thin articles covering related subtopics, merge them into a comprehensive pillar page. Then redirect the old URLs to the new resource. This can concentrate signals on one stronger page and give that page deeper topical coverage.
  • Update instead: If the page has value but is outdated, consider refreshing it with new data, original insights, or better formatting instead of deleting it.

Side note: For publishers managing thousands of queries, manual review is time-consuming. Why don’t you get a benefit from an AI analysis. Export your GSC Query data (including Query, Impressions, and Position). Upload it to a AI analysis tool and use the following prompt:

1. Group the top 500 queries into topical clusters using semantic similarity and user intent.
2. Identify any clusters that are unrelated to my core niche: [insert your niche here].
3. For each off-topic cluster, list the queries it includes and explain why it may indicate a dilution of topical focus for my website.
4. Prioritize the clusters that have the highest number of impressions or queries.
Important: Only use the data provided. Do not generate content or make assumptions beyond the dataset. Be concise and practical.

Step 3: Fulfill the user’s entire intent

This step helps you fix low-engagement signals. When a page ranks but users don’t click or don’t stay, it usually means the content is not fully answering their question. Your goal is to give them everything they need on one page, so they don’t have to go back to Google to look elsewhere.

  • Answer upfront: Put the clearest, most direct answer to the query in the first paragraph. This can improve your chances of winning a featured snippet and satisfies the user quickly.
  • Anticipate the next question: Use the Queries tab in GSC for that specific page. What follow-up questions are users asking? These long-tail queries often reflect deeper intent. Add dedicated sections that answer them thoroughly, leaving no gaps.

Side note: Export Diagnos 4 data, upload it to an AI tool, and use the following prompt along with your data:

You are an expert SEO content analyst. Analyze this Google Search Console export. Only use the data provided. Do not invent facts. Be concise and practical.
1. Identify pages or queries where the average position is between 1–10, but the CTR is below 5%.
2. For each of these, infer the main search intent (for example: informational, commercial, transactional, navigational) and the likely topic of the page.
3. Briefly explain why the current title and snippet may not be attracting clicks or matching that intent.
4. Suggest specific improvements to the page’s title and meta description, and 2–3 concrete content improvements that would better match user expectations and increase CTR.
5. Prioritize the pages by potential impact (start with the items that have the highest number of impressions).

Step 4: Validate content with expert authority

For sensitive topics, known as YMYL (Your Money or Your Life / content related to health, finance, safety, or major life decisions), trustworthiness is paramount.

  • Cite primary sources: Every statistic, claim, or fact should be backed by a verifiable source. Link to official government websites, peer-reviewed studies, or respected industry reports.
  • Add review badges: Create a formal editorial review process for critical topics. Include a visible badge that says “Expert reviewed by [Name, Credentials]” to signal real authority to both users and to better document your expertise for search engines.

Step 5: Master the human-AI collaboration

Google doesn’t penalize AI-generated content, it penalizes low-quality, unhelpful, and spammy content.

  • AI as an editor, not an author: Use AI tools to assist with research, outlining, summarizing, or grammar checks, but keep a human in charge of the final article.
  • Add the human varnish: The crucial step is human curation. Layer in your unique perspective, proprietary data, personal anecdotes, and specific examples that things AI can’t replicate.
    This human-added value is what truly elevates your content and avoids the generic tone that Google’s classifiers are trained to detect.
